Throughout 2025, we will be looking into the fascinating history and heritage of Lloyd Cars in Grimsby, finding out more about this unique business, the Lloyd family and the people who worked there.
Lloyd Cars Limited was founded in 1936 by Roland Lloyd (1904–65) and was based in Patrick Street East, Grimsby. From its foundation until the war, the firm built a small car called the “350,” and after the war, it manufactured a larger model called the “650.” The firm also developed a front-wheel-drive van, which was offered for sale in 1939, but only a handful were built before the war stopped production.
Lloyd Cars made most of the components for the “350” in-house and the firm’s expertise in precision machining meant that it quickly won a number of contracts to make parts for military aircraft. One of the firm’s biggest wartime customers was Rolls-Royce. Lloyd’s manufactured components for the Merlin engines that powered the Hurricane, Spitfire, and Lancaster that flew from the airfields of Lincolnshire
After the war, the company developed and manufactured a stylish two-seater sports car, the 650, which continued in production until 1950. The company continued in general engineering until 1983.
